Finnish Vocabulary Building: Nature as a Case Study
A good vocabulary of a certain subject of life, such as item names or their verbs
helps greatly in writing richly worded story in both Finnish and English. A
Finnish Vocabulary, kept in memory, and a greater number of similar English
words, will be a resource for an increasingly deep way of learning to write
stories for your lifetime. An example would be writing words about the activity of nature using
more knowledgable English. Using a dictionary, a person can quickly make a
several action verbs and a group of item names about camping and increase ones
knowledge of the Finnish language. For example, Using a pencil and a
paper, one could create a list of 25 words about the subject of the forest.
This could help a person who wants to write a
story about camping in the woods and these 25 words would be obligatory.
With a bilingual dictionary, it is very easy to begin this task. So with
English in the head and Finnish from the dictionary book, a picture starts to come
alive on the paper; the forest with a tent under the boughs of trees, surrounded
by trees, like birch, alder and pine. And the camper with his useful
tools begins to organize his campsite putting everything in its proper place; setting up
his rifle, axe, fishing pole, baskets, rope, sewing needle and tent. He can patch clothes
with his sewing needle, he can hunt small animals with his gun, he can sleep in his tent.
And so the story continues.
So using still ones own native language a person can write an English
Vocabulary of everything around a particular subject. First your native tongue
and then by making words pairs, there is a Finnish Vocabulary. Fpr myself, it
is easiest if I imagine myself in a place, like the forest and am imagining
myself walking and looking with my eyes in the place. I imagine my myself in
the forest and will camp there. So the words could be numbered as they are
learned both remembering them in the native tongue and learning them in the
Finnish Language. I think of them in my imagination. So on the 1) camping
trip= teltailu matka, many things happened. Perhaps all these 2) surroundings=
ymparistoja, and 3) tools= tyokalut were used in someway. Perhaps in the 4)
forest= metsa, 5) the camper=teltailija, 6) gathered= kerata=>kerasi, wood
and made 7) chopped=pillkottu 8) firewood= polttupuita with his 9) axe= kirves
=> kirveella . Perhaps then the camper decided to set-up his 10) tent= telta
in a 11) clearing= perkuu =>perkussa in the woods."
- It is all very easy. The way of making a vocabulary list is to
keep the sentences short!
The story can continue very quickly in a like manner using words and one's
imagination if one decided to concentrate only on making simple sentences
rather then having the perfect story. What else can I imagine? I have already
had a person gathering wood and setup his tent in the clearing of the woods. So
then camper decided to 12) hunt= metsastaa with his 13) rifle= kivääri and was
able to 14) shoot= ampua at 15) small animals= pikku elaimet. He also had a 16)
boat= vene near the campsite that was used for 17) fishing= kalastelu =>
kalastelussa. With a 18) fishing pole= ongenvapa =>ongenvapalla, he caught
many 19) fish= kala => kalaa. During the next week, he also used a 20)
sewing needle= ompeulu neula to repair 21) his pants= housut. The camper also
22) picked= poimia => poimi, 23) berries= marja=> marjoja. He put the
berries in a 24) basket=kori, korihin. Yes, by keeping sentences short and
using ones imagination- this is a way to quickly make a short Finnish
Vocabulary about a certain subject.
One way also to increase one's Finnish Vocabulary is to use lists compiled by
another person! You can do this if your imagination is not very good or if you
do not have the time necessary to actually look up words in a Finnish English
dictionary. For Finnish-English vocabulary learning for the novice user, I
reccomend the website: Up Beat Finnish Vocabulary, a website business licensed
in the State of Oregon, USA and created the beginner and run by an individual
entrepeneur. Available are more than 4000 vocabulary pairs and dozens and
dozens of categories. And it is possible to contact the original author of the

computers and mathematics, there are free websites available for that
Finnish-English vocabulary subject.
At the website UpBeat Finnish Vocabulary, there are dozens and dozens of lists
about a certain subjects as illustrated in this text, but one has to use their
imagination to create stories. At the website there is also the possibility of
studying basic noun inflection using a copyright javascript noun inflection
engine provided on that website. To increase your Finnish Vocabulary and to

Another option is to use your own dictionary and make up words list of your
own. This can be done easily by using your own Finnish-English Dictionary and
also browsing school texts or stories for little kids written in your native
language. Using this books a person can find the perfect setting and objects
for a perfect vocabulary exercise. One of these books that I find useful was
Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever
. Even though this is book is not an English-Finnish Vocabulary, using a
Finnish- English dictionary and the pictures there is a vocabulary exercise
ready made. For myself, I used a paid- tutor, and it was easy for us to make
simply sentences from the beautiful pictures drawn in the book by Richard
Scarry.

A good example of using a Finnish- English Vocabulary would be to try making
sentences of action- putting objects from one place to another, but perhaps
that is best done with the aid of a finnish-paid tutor. To considor a tutor,
ask for reccommendations from a person who is familiar with the professions of
Finns within your community. If you do no have the time nor financial resource-
then only with yourself, your can make an excellent vocabulary exercise. With
your selection of childrens books a safe-practice for novices would be to learn
the only the new names of the objects in the picture. So learn each object in
the picture in your native tongue and then in Finnish. Make word pairs and have
fun! Quiz yourself the next day to test your memory! Then if you are having the
help of a Finnish tutor, you can begin making simple action sentences like of
taking and puting objects from one place to another.
Write down your errors on a scrap of paper and test your errors. Be persistant
and also give yourself a break by doing other things around the house. You will
learn and succeed. No money! Have a best-friend quiz you! It is a matter of
time before success comes knocking on the door. You will win and conquer!
